Ultra Processed & Risky Ingredient AI Scanner
Identify risky additives and ultra-processed ingredients in your food
Ultra Processed
Is a classification system - not a judgement on whether something is good or bad.
But who decides what foods are ultra processed and what aren't? I'm glad you asked. When scientists or public health experts use the term "ultra-processed food", they're usually referring to a specific classification system called NOVA (ranking from 1-4). NOVA 4 is ultra processed foods and are typically industrial formulations found in sodas and fast food but also in some fortifications like protein powders. The NOVA system helps researchers study dietary patterns, not label foods as good or bad.
Risky Ingredients
Looks at all the available research and makes a judgement on its potential risk.
This is not a formal classification, it's one made by AI, prompted through a framework I created that specifies high trust sources and academic research. 99% of the time the ingredients that flag as risky are also flagged as ultra processed but this is not always the case. Protein powders are not risky - but are ultra processed. All risk studies are linked below each ingredient and alternatives are also suggested.
